Virginia League of the South Campaigns

The Virginia League of the South is actively involved in a number of ongoing campaigns across our state. Each of our campaigns is centered around individual liberty and, usually, States' Rights.

Some of our current campaigns are:

Educational: The Virginia League of the South believes that the Southern people are being poorly educated by the public school systems about their cultural, social, political, and economic heritage. Interestingly, Major General Patrick Cleburne predicted this toward the close of the war for Southern Independence. In January of 1864 he wrote,

“…Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late. We can give but a faint idea when we say it means the loss of all we now hold most sacred…personal property, lands, homesteads, liberty, justice, safety, pride, manhood. It means that the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the War, will be impressed by all influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision, it means the crushing of Southern manhood… to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties.”

With this sad state of affairs the order of the day, the Virginia League of the South sponsors several events each year as a means to undue the damage caused by what we like to refer to as “the Yankee Myth of History”.

Through “Hedge Schools”, Seminars, and State Meetings the Virginia LoS has offered the membership, as well as the general public, educational opportunities to learn about “The Real Lincoln”, “The Agrarianism of the Old South”, “The Foundations of Southern Culture”, and “Reconstruction: Past and Present”. In an effort to encourage attendance, these events have been held at different locations such as in Richmond, Lexington, Blacksburg, and Roanoke. The League of the South is blessed with a large list of experts who are drawn from many different fields.

In 2008, The Virginia League of the South will be offering several new Hedge School events. Plans are being formulated for an event in Fredricksburg. Leaders and other members of the League here in Virginia can help us determine the site and theme of other events and seminars to be held as well.

Finally, the Virginia League of the South in its campaign to educate Virginia’s people as to what has been and is being lost in terms of real liberty, believes it is the duty of each and every informed citizen, members or not, to work as individuals and families to actively promote the League’s goals and mission.

Political Action: As the ultimate aim of the League of the South requires a political solution through the resurrection and assertion of each State’s sovereignty, the Virginia League of the South must work to lay the foundation upon which Virginia can build a better future for her people.

Members of the Virginia LoS can have their greatest influence at the local level. There are many ways in which we can exercise our sense of duty to our people and our State. Some of the things we should be doing include:

  1. Volunteer our time in trying to better our community. In this way we can become acquainted with some of the movers and shakers in our area. It demonstrates a commitment on behalf of the LoS toward making our communities a better place to live and affords us the opportunity to express our ideas for enhancing Virginians quality of life.

  2. Attending and participating in school board and local government functions and activities. What better place to express and expand our ideas on liberty and independence.

  3. We can all participate in public discourse by writing letters or making phone calls to our area newspaper editor, through call-ins on radio talk shows, passing out flyers, setting up a booth at the local flea market, or just seeking common cause with other individuals or groups that desire political changes we also support.

  4. Make contact and get to know our representatives at the local, regional, and State level. Write them, phone them, and most importantly, meet with them. They have to know that we hold them accountable for the actions they do or do not take. As General Forrest would say, “Keep the skeer on”.

The Virginia Flag: In our efforts to elevate the pride and patriotism that men like Patrick Henry, George Mason, John Randolph, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson held for Virginia, we are embarking on a campaign in 2007 to encourage individuals, businesses, and organizations of all stripes to fly the State Flag in place of, or in addition to, any other flags.

We believe the Virginia Flag should never be flown in a position of inferiority or subservience to any other flag as it represents the bulwark of our freedom from tyranny and the repository of our people’s right to self-government.

It is our aim to mass produce and distribute a flyer that will be widely distributed to individuals, groups, and businesses that will result in State Flags going up all across the Commonwealth.

A restoration of pride and identity as Virginians is a necessary part of any attempt by the State of Virginia to stand between her people and those who would attempt to foist unconstitutional, immoral, or tyrannical acts and edicts upon us.

Real Federalism and the fundamental principles of limited and self-government both undergird the doctrine of State’s Rights as it was accepted and understood by those that established our union of Sovereign States. That Virginia retains the rights of nullification, interposition, and secession can be easily proven through her ratification document of the Constitution, the Virginia-Kentucky Resolutions, and the 9th & 10th Amendment of the Bill of Rights.
